This coming Saturday June 15th, people who qualify to restore their voting rights under Amendment 4 can attend a Rights Restoration Community Fair at Iglesia Episcopal Jesus de Nazaret* where lawyers will be on hand to assist returning citizens with restoration of their voting rights. This event is one of many being organized before June 30th to help people navigate any issues they may encounter while registering to vote under the new legislation that was passed by Florida State Legislature this year. The community fair will have everything that people may need to get back on their feet while raising a family, it will have a job fair, kid friendly activities and even lawyers specially trained for Amendment 4 Implementation who can assist with challenges that may arise. These events are being organized by LatinoJustice PRLDEF and League of Women Voters of Florida with support from Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, Faith in Florida, Alianza for Progress and Hispanic Federation.

Amendment 4 passed with 2/3 of voter support in November 2018, unfortunately the implementation of Amendment 4 was impeded by Florida State Legislature. Legislation passed shortly after the vote requires people who were formerly incarcerated to pay any outstanding fines and fees before registering to vote. All the groups involved recognize how confusing and difficult the process could be and, because of this, the community fairs are being organized. These community fairs are happening in Gainesville, Panama City, Jacksonville, Seminole, Tallahassee, Tampa, Key West, Miami, and Palm Beach. Notably, this event is also happening 4 days before Juneteenth, the day that slavery was abolished.

Trainings for attorneys interested in assisting with Amendment 4 implementation is happening on a rolling basis and there will be a training the morning of June 15th

*Media will not be allowed in or around the community fair to help preserve the privacy of individuals involved in the fair, however representatives from the organizations involved and the community can be available to talk before or after the event.
