Civil Rights Group Demands Book on Puerto Rican Baseball Legend Be Reshelved for School Children in Duval County, Florida
Book on Roberto Clemente removed from school library shelves for references to racism and discrimination

The following statement can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President and General Counsel, LatinoJustice PRLDEF:

“The Duval County School District’s removal of a book about the life and experiences of the legendary Puerto Rican baseball star and humanitarian Roberto Clemente is the latest attempt from Florida’s education administrators to score cheap political points at the expense of the education and well-being of Florida’s children. Not only were Clemente’s career achievements unparalleled as a Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star player with over 3,000 career hits, but he helped others throughout his life, most notably in the 1972 mission to help victims of a massive earthquake in Nicaragua that cost him his life,

“Learning about Clemente’s achievements, his pride in his Afro-Boricua identity and his struggles with racism and discrimination would provide needed insight on historical conditions in the U.S., and inspiration for the majority Black and Latino student population in Duval County schools. We urge the school district to restore this book and others that shine a light on the experiences of exemplary people in our country who have contributed greatly to our society and culture. Our children deserve to understand the full scope of our society’s flaws and strengths.”
