LatinoJustice Announces Lourdes Rosado As Its New President And General Counsel

NEW YORK, NY — LatinoJustice PRLDEF today announced that Lourdes Rosado will join the organization as President and General Counsel, effective September 7, 2021.  Rosado will take over from Juan Cartagena, who after 10 years of service recently announced his retirement.

Ms. Rosado brings to this leadership role 25+ years of experience as a social justice champion, working to advance the very rights and opportunities that are at the core of LJP’s mission.  In her most recent role at the New York Civil Liberties Union, she served as Program Director and as a member of the senior leadership team, overseeing the legal, policy, and field organizing departments, NYCLU’s Education Policy Center, and NYCLU’s chapters and regional offices.  Previously, Ms. Rosado was the Chief of the Civil Rights Bureau in the New York Office of the Attorney General and served as Associate Director of the Philadelphia-based Juvenile Law Center.

“It is a privilege to assume this leadership role in one of the nation’s premier civil rights organizations, at a time when the Latinx community is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our country and democracy,” said Ms. Rosado.

A skilled litigator and appellate attorney, Ms. Rosado has successfully led and directed targeted advocacy efforts on a wide variety of civil rights issues, including challenging the rescission of DACA and the enactment of the Muslim travel ban; fighting dangerous conditions of confinement for youth in correctional and child welfare facilities; going after employers who expose employees to sexual harassment and a hostile work place; defeating efforts to prevent immigrant children from enrolling in public schools; holding school districts accountable for disciplinary practices that discriminate against students based on their race, ethnicity, or disability status; and dismantling barriers to quality health care as well as educational and employment opportunities faced by people of color.

"The LatinoJustice Board of Directors is exceedingly pleased to have selected Ms. Rosado as LJP’s incoming leader, succeeding Juan Cartagena's profoundly successful transformation of this storied organization. Ms. Rosado's expertise across our programmatic pillars, focus on vulnerable communities and expansive vision are well-matched to LJP's strategic priorities as we work alongside supporters, peers and allies nationwide to transform the social and racial justice landscape,” said José Ramón González, Chair of the LatinoJustice Board of Directors.

“A new chapter in the legacy of LatinoJustice PRLDEF will now be written as we enter our 50th Anniversary year in 2022. The appointment of Lourdes Rosado as the next President & General Counsel bodes well for our institution given her public interest law career and strong civil rights background,” said Juan Cartagena, outgoing President & General Counsel. “I look forward to hearing about her successes and stand ready to assist in the transition.”
