Massive Damage Due to Category 1 Storm Comes on 5th Anniversary of Hurricane Maria
NEW YORK - As Hurricane Fiona made landfall in Puerto Rico on Monday, on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the devastating Hurricane Maria, around a million people have been affected by island-wide blackouts and no running water while hundreds have been forced to evacuate their homes due to severe flooding.
The statement below can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President & General Counsel of LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
"The damage we’re seeing in Puerto Rico due to Hurricane Fiona, coming almost five years to the day after Hurricane Maria took the lives of more than 3,000 people and wreaked havoc on much of the island’s infrastructure, is more than deja vu. What we’re seeing is what happens when the profits of a few are favored over the long-term health of a people.
"Puerto Ricans affected by the hurricane need critical and just recovery, including access to safe and accessible shelters and distribution centers, individual and public assistance, and a moratorium on evictions and payments for housing. We demand that island, local, state, and federal governments take quick action to ensure our communities experience no more unnecessary hardships.
“Lastly, our support for the people of Puerto Rico extends to their fight to cancel the contract with LUMA Energy, the private entity in control of its electrical grid. The government promised to prepare the island for the next storm. That test is now, and LUMA has failed. LatinoJustice will continue to work on behalf of the Puerto Rican people and diaspora to ensure our communities receive the resources, respect, and justice they need and deserve."

LatinoJustice Llama por Respuesta Rápida por el Gobierno Federal para Ayudar a Puertorriqueños Tras Huracán Fiona
Daño masivo tras tormenta Categoría 1 en el Quinto Aniversario del Huracan Maria
NUEVA YORK - Cuando el huracán Fiona tocó tierra en Puerto Rico el lunes, en la víspera del quinto aniversario del devastador huracán María, alrededor de un millón de personas se vieron afectadas por apagones en toda la isla y por la falta de agua corriente, mientras que cientos se vieron obligados a evacuar sus hogares debido a inundaciones severas.
La siguiente declaración se puede atribuir a Lourdes M. Rosado, Presidenta y Consejera General de LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“El daño que estamos viendo en Puerto Rico debido al huracán Fiona, casi cinco años después del día en que el huracán María se cobró la vida de más de 3,000 personas y causó estragos en gran parte de la infraestructura de la isla, es más que un deja vu. Lo que estamos viendo es lo que sucede cuando se favorecen las ganancias de unos pocos sobre la salud a largo plazo de un pueblo.
“Los puertorriqueños afectados por el huracán necesitan una recuperación crítica y justa, que incluya acceso a refugios y centros de distribución seguros y accesibles, asistencia individual y pública, y una moratoria en los desalojos y pagos de vivienda. Exigimos que la isla, los gobiernos locales, estatales y federales tomen medidas rápidas para garantizar que nuestras comunidades no experimenten más dificultades innecesarias.
“Por último, nuestro apoyo al pueblo de Puerto Rico se extiende a su lucha por cancelar el contrato con LUMA Energy, la entidad privada que controla su red eléctrica. El gobierno prometió preparar la isla para la próxima tormenta. Esa prueba es ahora, y LUMA ha fallado. LatinoJustice continuará trabajando en nombre del pueblo puertorriqueño y la diáspora para garantizar que nuestras comunidades reciban los recursos, el respeto y la justicia que necesitan y merecen".
