LatinoJustice Joins Latina and Reproductive Rights Groups in Brief to Stop Florida’s Ultra-Restrictive Anti-Abortion Law
Brief Highlights “irreparable harm” to Florida Latinas as case to uphold block on HB 5 moves to the state’s Supreme Court
Tallahasee, Florida – LatinoJustice PRLDEF and global law firm Baker McKenzie joined the Florida Access Network, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, Esperanza United, and a Florida resident identified as “A.L.” in an amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) brief filed March 9, supporting the block on HB 5, Florida’s repressive law banning abortions in the state after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
The case, Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida v. State of Florida, argues that the law violates the state constitution’s guarantee to “the right to be let alone and free from governmental intrusion into the person’s private life.”
The following statement can be attributed to Francisca Fajana, Director of Racial Justice Strategy at LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“The burdens imposed by HB 5, forcing people who seek abortions to incur extra expenses, delay care and inflicting untold emotional and mental harm, would cause irreparable harm to 1.4 million Latinas in the state, and their families. Almost half of Florida women of childbearing age are Latina, and they are 37% more likely than whites to be part of a low-income family. We hope that the Florida Supreme Court will once and for all throw out this odious law and preserve a fundamental right for Floridians to decide what is best for their families.”
El caso, Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida v.
