On November 13th, more than 450 LatinoJustice PRLDEF sponsors, friends and supporters joined us at Tribeca 360 to celebrate the 2018 honorees – Ron Tabak, Lisa Martinez Wolmart and Microsoft – and to learn more about and support our tremendous social justice work.  Gala proceeds help us carry out this work all year long – so thank you again to all of our sponsors

Among the most moving moments of the evening was when Ron Tabak, a long-time LatinoJustice Board member and a lifelong champion of human rights and social justice, received the newly renamed Ronald J. Tabak Community Champion Award. Ron’s work to end capital punishment, to expand pro bono service and to foster young Legal Fellows has made a mighty impact and we are grateful. Earlier this month, we held a Tribute to Ronald J. Tabak, where more than 100 public interest and private sector friends and supporters celebrated his achievements.

2018 Lucero honoree, Lisa Martinez Wolmart reminded us that it isn’t enough to acknowledge the injustices that affect Latinx and other marginalized populations, but that all have an ethical imperative to actively reject those who create injustice. Finally, Brad Smith (in a videotaped message) and Darlyn Rodriguez of 2018 Corporate Leader Microsoft highlighted the moral, economic and professional value of celebrating diversity and combating injustice.

Some reactions from our honorees:

I am delighted to receive this award, because it will likely encourage many others to do pro bono legal work in areas of great interest and need and encourage sources of pro bono work to be more pro-active in offering pro bono opportunities on subjects not yet dealt with. Moreover, I think that my receiving this award will bring new attention to the positive role that bar association committees can have in important public discourse,” said Ronald J. Tabak, Special Counsel, Pro-Bono at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.

"I am honored to receive this award from LatinoJustice. To be considered a guiding star in the legal community is an especially proud moment for me, because, as a Latina and an attorney, I recognize the importance of LatinoJustice's work to protect the civil and human rights of our community and all in need,” said Lisa Martinez Wolmart, Vice President and Corporate Counsel, Prudential Financial.
