LatinoJustice Statement on CCRB Report on NYPD Handling of 2020 Protests
The following statement can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President and General Counsel, LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“Today’s CCRB report demonstrates that the NYPD met 2020 demonstrations against police brutality with simply more police brutality. The NYPD sent waves of officers, with inadequate or affirmatively hidden documentation, to brutalize protesters, including by using techniques such as mass arrest and kettling, which have long been shown to instigate conflict rather than promote public safety.
“Together, the hundreds of individual investigations highlighted in the report show the NYPD’s contempt for those who challenge its authority, and its disregard for the rule of law. The department must enact and implement a zero-tolerance policy for the behaviors detailed. The recent murder of Tyré Nichols shows the harms perpetuated when officers are allowed to engage in these practices unchecked.
“What happened in May and June 2020 was a police riot. The NYPD instigated violence and caused violence, just as they did in Tompkins Square in 1988, on the Brooklyn Bridge in 1992, at the United Nations in 2003, and at the Republican National Convention in 2004, among dozens of repeat offenses. The city must disband the NYPD’s most violent units and completely re-imagine the response to demonstrations."
