LatinoJustice Statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the Importance of the Expansion of Voting Rights Across our Nation

Monday, January 17th, 2022, marks the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The following is a statement issued by LatinoJustice PRLDEF Director of Racial Justice Strategy, Fran Fajana on the observation of this federal holiday.

“Today, as we remember the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we honor his legacy by continuing the fight for racial justice and the expansion of our voting rights. As Dr. King once noted, “The struggle to eliminate the evil of racial injustice constitutes one of the major struggles of our time,” which unfortunately still resonates with our fight today. Across our nation, thousands of Black and Brown Americans are losing their right to vote. Voting rights throughout the country continue to be openly under attack. Hundreds of voter suppression bills are being introduced, including some which have already been passed that restrict access to the ballot and have enacted voter ID requirements that threaten our voter protection rights and promote voter suppression. LatinoJustice supports passage of both the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, and will continue to work to protect, preserve and expand our right to vote so that our elections are accessible, free and fair for all. That way, we can build a country that works for all of us.”
