Statement on the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

We lost an icon when we lost Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A woman who inspired men and women to be better, to work towards the ultimate prize, to address inequality. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg made history before our eyes.

To the staff and board of LatinoJustice PRLDEF, her legacy and her place in history is undeniable. Our legal defense fund, like others in the country, used the same strategies and tactics she honed as a pioneering litigator on behalf of the marginalized. Our lawyers studied her cases, devoured her opinions, and marveled at her tenacity and longevity. More importantly, our Latinas in all professions reaped the benefits of the doors she opened and kept open for those to follow.

Today we mourn. We send our condolences to her family and her colleagues in the courts, at Rutgers Law School in Newark and at Columbia Law School in New York. Let us pause and reflect on her legacy and revel in the knowledge that she made the world a better place. Soon enough, we will rightfully address what comes next. But today we reflect.

In 2016, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg wrote the following: “How fortunate I was to be alive and a lawyer when, for the first time in United States history, it became possible to urge, successfully, before legislatures and courts, the equal-citizenship stature of women and men as a fundamental constitutional principle.”

How fortunate we all are in the U.S. to have witnessed Justice Ginsberg in our lifetimes. Que en paz descanse.
