LatinoJustice Statement in Response to the Florida Senate Publishing their First Congressional Maps

The Florida Senate is proposing Florida’s new 28th congressional district in the central part of the state, where the population grew in greatest proportions. This only makes common sense and is a step in the right direction. Nonetheless, the four proposed Congressional maps submitted by the Florida Senate, fail to reflect that the population growth was fueled primarily by Latinos. Despite the fact that Latinos now comprise over 25% of the state’s population, we are in the majority in only 4 of the proposed 28 congressional districts. These are the same four congressional districts Latinos were in the majority before the Census data was released. LatinoJustice PRLDEF will continue to work on behalf of communities fighting to be afforded greater opportunities to elect candidates of our choice, in line with the Voting Rights Act and in proportion to the enormous Latino population growth in the state of Florida during the past decade.
