Statement on Tragic Bronx Fire
On Sunday, January 9th, 2022, a Bronx apartment fire led to the death of 19 people including nine children. The following is a statement issued by LatinoJustice PRLDEF regarding this horrible incident.
“LatinoJustice sends its heartfelt condolences and thoughts to the survivors, the bereaved and our Bronx community. A space heater is said to cause this fire, but poverty and marginalization were the kindling. It's no coincidence that this tragedy has affected Black people and immigrants of color who were just trying to keep warm on a cold winter's night. We need to stop blaming people living in poverty for trying to survive. We need to ensure that those responsible for their living conditions are held accountable so tragedies like these do not repeat themselves.”
LatinoJustice PRLDEF works to create a more just society by using and challenging the rule of law to secure transformative, equitable and accessible justice, by empowering our community and by fostering leadership through advocacy and education.
