LatinoJustice Statement: Videos of Arrest of Formerly Incarcerated People for Voting Show "Degradation of Democracy" in Florida
New York- Videos depicting the moments that several formerly incarcerated people in Floride were arrested in Florida in August under charges from the state's Office of Election Crimes and Security for supposedly committing election fraud were released in the press this week, following Freedom of Information requests from media outlets.
The following statement can be attributed to Lourdes Rosado, President and General Counsel for LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
"The videos of the biased, targeted arrests ordered by Governor DeSantis paint a clear picture of the degradation of democracy and leadership in Florida. DeSantis orchestrated the arrests of voters in an attempt to disenfranchise and disempower Black and Latino communities that reject his racist policies and threaten his personal power and political ambitions. This video further lifts the veil on how DeSantis directly and perniciously circumvents the civil rights of formerly incarcerated Floridians -- people for whom LatinoJustice and our allies advocate every day.
"Instead of fueling his personal motivations, DeSantis should pull the state funds being used for this political theater and redirect them toward expanding franchise and opportunity for all in the state of Florida."
Declaración de LatinoJustice: Videos de arrestos por votar de personas anteriormente encarceladas muestran "la degradación de la democracia" en la Florida
Nueva York- Esta semana se publicaron en la prensa videos que muestran los momentos en que varias personas anteriormente encarceladas en Florida fueron arrestadas en Florida en agosto bajo cargos de la Oficina de Delitos Electorales y Seguridad del estado por supuestamente cometer fraude electoral, luego de las solicitudes de los medios de comunicación bajo la Ley de Libertad de Información.
La siguiente declaración se puede atribuir a Lourdes Rosado, Presidenta y Consejera General de LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“Los videos de los arrestos ordenados por el gobernador DeSantis dirigidos a personas anteriormente encarceladas muestran claramente la degradación de la democracia y el liderazgo en la Florida. DeSantis organizó los arrestos de estos votantes para privar de sus derechos y desempoderar a las comunidades negras y latinas que rechazan sus políticas racistas y amenazan su poder personal y sus ambiciones políticas. Este video levanta aún más el velo sobre cómo DeSantis elude directa y perniciosamente los derechos civiles de los floridanos anteriormente encarcelados, personas por las que LatinoJustice y nuestros aliados abogan todos los días.
“En lugar de alimentar sus motivaciones personales, DeSantis debería retirar los fondos estatales que se utilizan para este teatro político y redirigirlos hacia la expansión de la franquicia y la oportunidad para todos en el estado de Florida”.
