Racist Slurs by City Leaders in Los Angeles is Unacceptable and Infuriating
Civil Rights Organization LatinoJustice Condemns Behavior and Urges for Their Resignation

New York, NY – A leaked recording has been brought to light between three Los Angeles City Council members and of L.A. County Federation of Labor President from a conversation in October 2021. The audio revealed racist comments and remarks by the four individuals about their colleagues, all of which took place behind closed doors.

The following statement can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President & General Counsel of LatinoJustice PRLDEF:

“As a Latino civil rights organization that’s worked for five decades on the redistricting process to secure Latinos fair political representation, we are disgusted by the anti-Black and anti-indigenous remarks made last Fall by several Los Angeles elected officials while under the guise of discussing their city’s latest redistricting process. That members of the Latino community who themselves have benefited from the work to dismantle racist systems and policies are engaging in racist rhetoric is infuriating. Our communities deserve representation that not only reflects us numerically, but also reflects principles that will advance our collective well-being, regardless of race, national origin or any other characteristic. No one gets a pass for perpetuating hateful prejudices. Councilmembers Martinez, De Leon and Cedillo have shown that they cannot represent Angelenos with respect, and all should resign immediately. No movement can be successful when led by those who don't respect or uphold the very principles they are meant to defend.”
