Statement from Juan Cartagena on the murder of Andrés Guardado by LA County Sheriffs

New York, NY – 18-year-old Andrés Guardado was murdered by an LA County Sheriff’s deputy last night as he tried to earn a living working as a security guard at an auto body shop in Gardena, CA.  The following is a statement from Juan Cartagena, President and General Counsel at LatinoJustice PRLDEF, on the news.

"We are no longer shocked to learn of these killings, but we remain appalled, deeply saddened, and enraged at law enforcement’s callous disregard for Black and brown lives.

It’s not lack of training.

It’s not fear.

It’s the system.

There are no reforms sufficient to end this culture of violence and malfeasance. We call for immediate transformational change that will divest from our flawed systems of policing and re-invest those much needed funds directly back into our community.

Andrés Guardado, like Sean Monterossa, Erik Salgado, Rayshard Brooks, and George Floyd should be alive today. Say their names."
