STATEMENT OF JUAN CARTAGENA, PRESIDENT & GENERAL COUNSEL LATINOJUSTICE PRLDEF ON THE PASSING OF FRANK LEWIS

On behalf of LatinoJustice PRLDEF I extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Frank Lewis, Adjunct Professor at New York University, member of the New York Voting Rights Consortium, and a friend in the struggle to secure the voting rights of millions of New Yorkers.

Mr. Lewis was an excellent mathematician and statistician who provided hundreds of volunteer hours in the quest to enforce the Voting Rights Act for New York’s people of color communities. He was Brooklyn through and through and part of the team of excellent attorneys, analysts, and activists that came through the Center for Law & Social Justice at Medgar Evers College.

Through the work of Frank Lewis, and many others, the New York Voting Rights Consortium forged shared principles of work, detailed redistricting goals, and eventually “Unity Plans” that coalesced the best thinking on how to preserve and expand the voting rights of African-Americans, Latinos, and Asian-Americans in the City of New York.

Frank’s demeanor was perfect for the job. And his intellect will be missed by all. May he rest in peace.
