Voting Rights Organizations Issue Statement On Lawsuit in Florida to Extend Voter Registration Deadline

Groups continue push for extension while case is heard in federal court

Today, a federal court judge held a status conference in a lawsuit filed by a coalition of voting rights groups seeking an extension of the online voter registration (OVR) system in the state of Florida after the site went down on the last day of registration preventing countless voters in the state from registering.

The coalition, which includes Advancement Project National Office, Demos, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, and Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer on behalf of Dream Defenders, New Florida Majority, Organize Florida, and Florida Immigrant Coalition has a released a joint statement in response to today’s hearing.

“We are encouraged by the inquiries that Judge Mark Walker made during today’s hearing. We believe it showed a willingness to understand the impact this has for aspiring voters. We stress the urgency in resolving this matter and extending the voter registration deadline so that all eligible Floridians have the opportunity to vote and participate in the November 3 election.”

A hearing will be held tomorrow Thursday, Oct. 8 at 8 a.m. where the court will consider the coalition’s motion for a preliminary injunction to extend the voter registration deadline and make other accommodations.
