Otro Apagón: Rebuilding Puerto Rico’s Power Grid
Join LatinoJustice’s Líderes Young Professionals Board for a discussion on Puerto Rico post-Huracán María.
Huracán María arrived on Puerto Rico’s shores on September 20, 2017. In its path of destruction, she claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Puerto Ricans and left most of the island without power for almost a year—the longest blackout in U.S. history. Today, over seven years later and following yet another island-wide blackout on New Year’s Eve 2024, Puerto Rico remains plagued by an unstable power grid that continues to put lives at risk despite substantial investments and federal-state government initiatives aimed at stabilizing the system. This panel discussion will guide the audience through the current state of Puerto Rico’s power grid and its rebuilding, how we got here, and what the path forward looks like to rebuild a power system that is reliable, resilient, and clean-energy sourced.
