In Aftermath of Helene LatinoJustice Reminds Community of their Rights

New York, NY – Hurricane Helen, a Category 4 storm, has left massive destruction along the Florida coast and has caused historic flooding for more than 700 miles and the death toll is set to be at more than 100 deaths.

The following statement can be attributed to Nickole Durbin‑Felix, Equal Justice Works Disaster Resilience Program Legal Fellow at LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“As we continue to see the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene, we want to point out to our community that individual assistance was declared in several counties in Florida by FEMA. This can help provide direct financial and other assistance to eligible individuals and households who have experienced losses due to the storm. We encourage those affected to apply to this federal relief as soon as possible and remind our community that they have the right to call FEMA and receive assistance in their language. For assistance, contact the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362 (Press 1 for English, 2 for Spanish, 3 for other languages). Our heart goes out to those affected and to the families of those who lost loved ones in this catastrophic storm.”
