A Decade Later, Eric Garner’s Recorded Cry of “I Can’t Breathe" Still Reverberates
New York, NY – The death of Eric Garner a 43- year-old man from Staten Island on July 17th, 2014, was shared across the world from a video recording. A cellphone video that captured how a New York City Police Officer placed Garner in a chokehold while he said, “I can’t breathe," until he died generated widespread national attention and served as a catalyst for widespread demonstrations against racist police violence.
On the 10th anniversary of Eric Garner’s death, LatinoJustice PRLDEF issued the following statement, which can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado at LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“Eric Garner’s painful last words, ‘I can’t breathe,’ captured on a cellphone video, still reverberate today. As we remember how his death highlighted what our communities face every day at the hands of unscrupulous police officers who use excessive and deadly force against them, we commit to defending the right to record as an essential tool to check police misconduct and help ensure transparency and fairness.
“We all have a First Amendment right to film police if we are not interfering in their affairs and in a public space. We will continue to defend this right, in our case representing citizen journalist Sean Paul Reyes, and advocate for accountability in policing for a just and safe society for all.”

Nueva York, NY – La muerte de Eric Garner, un hombre de 43 años de Staten Island, el 17 de julio de 2014, se compartió en todo el mundo a través de una grabación de video. Un video de un teléfono celular que capturó cómo un oficial de policía de la ciudad de Nueva York estranguló a Garner mientras decía: "No puedo respirar", hasta que murió generó una atención nacional generalizada y sirvió como catalizador de manifestaciones generalizadas contra la violencia policial racista.
