Laken Riley Act “Terrorizes Families and Enriches Private Prisons Says LatinoJustice
National Immigrant Right Organization Denounces Passage of Laken Riley Act

New York, NY— The President signed the Laken Riley Act into law today. It is the first piece of legislation approved by the new administration.

The law gives unprecedented power to state Attorneys General to enforce federal immigration laws and mandates detention for immigrants charged with some non-violent offenses such as shoplifting.

The following statement can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President and General Counsel of LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“By making the cruel Laken Riley Act the first piece of legislation approved under the new administration, both the President and Congress are telling people in the US, who they are pledged to serve, that their primary interest is to use the power of federal laws and resources to terrorize families, deny people the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, and enrich private prison companies that abuse those detained.

“LatinoJustice will fight this vicious law and all attempts to illegally and inhumanely detain and deport people living in the US.”
