LatinoJustice Applauds Block of Florida Anti-Immigrant Law

New York, NY – A U.S. district judge in Florida today temporarily blocked a new law aimed at criminalizing the entry or reentry of undocumented immigrants into the state.

Judge Kathleen Williams said the law is likely unconstitutional and likely preempted by the federal Immigration and Nationality Act. The enforcement of the law has been suspended for 14 days, and a hearing has been scheduled for April 18.

The statement below can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President & General Counsel, LatinoJustice PRLDEF: “We applaud Judge Williams’ decision to temporarily block Florida's harmful and unconstitutional immigration law. This is a critical step forward in the fight for immigrant rights and a reaffirmation that no state can override federal law or criminalize people for seeking a better life. LatinoJustice will continue to work to fight for dignity, safety, and justice for our immigrant community.”
