LatinoJustice Calls TX Land Office Offer to Incoming President “Despicable”

New York, NY – The Texas General Land Office sent a letter to President-elect, Donald Trump on Tuesday stating its willingness to collaborate with his incoming administration by offering a 1,400-acre ranch along the Rio Grande Valley, near the Texas and Mexico border, for a migrant detention center.

Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham mentioned in the letter that they are “fully prepared” to enter an agreement with any federal agencies involved in deporting individuals” and will offer Starr County ranch for these efforts.

In light of this news, LatinoJustice PRLDEF released the following statement that can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President and General Counsel, LatinoJustice PRLDEF:

"It’s despicable that an office that stands to help all Texans is stooping down to hurt its own community. As Texas continues its relentless expansion of Operation Lone Star in violation of civil and human rights, the federal government is under no obligation to help it. LatinoJustice will double down its efforts to ensure Operation Lone Star and all attempts at targeting our immigrant communities are stopped.”
