LatinoJustice Calls for “Urgent Need” to Restore the Voting Rights Act of 1965
New York, NY – In commemoration of the 59th Anniversary of the signage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that prohibited racial discrimination in voting, LatinoJustice PRLDEF has provided the following statement.
The following statement can be attributed to Isabelle C. Muhlbauer, Voting Rights National Advocacy Manager at LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“We are currently seeing a wave of intense efforts around the country that are curtailing our communities' voting rights and restricting the freedom to vote. Court decisions have stripped away many of the protections in the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, which is disproportionately impacting black and brown voters, stifling their voices and leaving them vulnerable to voter suppression and discrimination. The need to restore the VRA is urgent to counter discrimination everywhere. LatinoJustice has a long history of advocating for our communities right to vote and working to expand this fundamental right. Which is why we urge Congress to support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act to ensure every member of our community can have unfettered access to the ballot box and fully participate in our democracy.
