LatinoJustice Condemns Federal Rollbacks on Environmental Justice Protections

New York, NY – This week, the Trump Administration announced sweeping rollbacks of key environmental justice protections, including the rescission of Executive Order 12898. This critical order required federal agencies to assess the environmental and health impacts of their actions on low-income and minority populations. The Administration also declared a national energy emergency to support fossil fuel production.

The administration also proposed revoking provisions in statutes like the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and eliminated funding that had been appropriated through the Inflation Reduction Act and withdrew the US from the landmark Paris climate agreement.

The following statement can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President and General Counsel, LatinoJustice PRLDEF:

“Within the first days of his presidency, the Trump Administration has dismantled decades of progress in the environmental justice movement. These rollbacks on federal policies, climate-friendly funding, and the U.S.'s international commitments to climate change mitigation, threaten Latino communities, who are disproportionately impacted by hazardous waste, polluted air, and climate-related vulnerabilities.

LatinoJustice PRLDEF remains steadfast in its commitment to challenging these harmful federal actions. We will continue advocating for the health, well-being, and resilience of our communities while working to strengthen environmental protections at the state and local levels.”
