LatinoJustice Denounces “Gutting” of Department of Justice Voting Rights Section

New York, NY – The Department of Justice (DOJ) removed all seven senior managers who had been in charge of the agency’s voting rights section, and all active cases the unit was carrying out have been dismissed.

The following statement can be attributed to Isabelle Muhlbauer, National Advocacy Manager for Voting Rights, LatinoJustice PRLDEF:

"The gutting of senior staff overseeing the Department of Justice’s voting rights section and diverting the group’s mission from civil rights enforcement to investigating allegations of nearly non-existent voter fraud effectively decimates DOJ’s ability to protect the rights of the majority of eligible voters.

“In the wake of this staff purge, eligible voters will be left with no meaningful federal government remedies to redress mounting civil rights violations, as individual states pass more restrictive voting rights measures that place more and more obstacles for voters to lawfully access their right to cast a ballot.

“The DOJ has historically played a critical role in identifying, preventing and rectifying unconstitutional violations, a duty it cannot carry out in these circumstances. The dismissal of active cases is deeply troubling and heralds an ominous turn of events.”
