LatinoJustice Denounces Suspension of Florida State Attorney Worrell as Abuse of Power by Gov. DeSantis

Orlando, FL – Florida's Ninth Judicial Circuit State Attorney, Monique Worrell, was suspended from her position on Wednesday by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. This is the second time that DeSantis has taken such an extreme action in removing a duly-elected State Attorney. Worrell, elected in November 2020, is the only Black woman state attorney in the state of Florida.

The following statement can be attributed to Delmarie Alicea, Associate Counsel at LatinoJustice PRLDEF:

“Once again, we are seeing DeSantis abuse his position as Governor in suspending yet another state attorney who was elected to their position by voters, an action that is not only improper but does not follow protocol. Suspension is usually reserved for the most extreme circumstances, where an elected official has been charged with a crime or is unable to carry out their duties. Neither of these circumstances is the case with Worrell thereby raising legitimate questions over the Governor’s decision to suspend her, which appears to be politically motived. The removal of a duly elected public servant is an abuse of power that undermines the will of the people. More than half of Osceola County and one third of Orange County is Latino, and Worrell was elected with 66% of the vote. We demand that our community's voice be respected, and that their right to choose who represents them cannot be disregarded.”
