LatinoJustice PRLDEF Announces Summer 2024 Nixon Peabody Civil Rights Fellow
Internship Expands Opportunities in Legal Profession to Law Students

New York, NY – LatinoJustice PRLDEF – a national civil rights organization working to protect and expand the rights of Latinos has announced Patricia De La Hoya-Velez as the recipient of the Nixon Peabody LatinoJustice Summer 2024 Civil Rights Fellowship.
Ms. De La Hoya-Velez, who grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, is a third-year law student attending the Michigan State University School of Law in East Lansing, Michigan. The Nixon Peabody LatinoJustice PRLDEF Summer Civil Rights Fellowship was created by Nixon Peabody and LatinoJustice in 2020 to provide a summer stipend to a law student participating in LatinoJustice’s full-time 10-week summer legal internship program working on civil rights issues.
“I am grateful and truly honored to be the recipient of the Nixon Peabody LatinoJustice Summer 2024 Civil Rights Fellowship,” said Patricia De La Hoya-Velez, who is working with LatinoJustice’s Legal Department this summer. “This fellowship provided me the opportunity to dive into real-world legal practice and strengthen my ability to advocate. As I maneuver in the legal field and political arena as a first-generation Chicana, I know that my mother is rooting for me from the clouds above. This fellowship allowed me to honor my mother’s memory by giving me the tools to use my voice and flourish into a strong civil rights advocate for myself and my community.”
The fellowship was created after Nixon Peabody and LatinoJustice’s successful representation of Roxana Orellana Santos, a Salvadorean immigrant who had been racially profiled and arrested by the Frederick County, Maryland, Sheriff’s Office in 2008. After 10+ years and a ruling that local law enforcement official cannot arrest and detain someone based upon an administrative immigration warrant, Santos v. Frederick County Board was settled in 2020, requiring the sheriff to adopt new training and arrest policies, and payment of damages including $500,000 in legal fees. Nixon Peabody donated its share of the fees to LatinoJustice as the referring nonprofit, becoming the sponsor of LJP’s Cesar A. Perales (CAP) Leadership Institute and creating the summer civil rights fellowship.
“Nixon Peabody’s generous contribution and continuous partnership with our CAP leadership Institute is a wonderful reflection of the firm’s continuing commitment to expanding opportunities in the legal profession,” said Jose Perez, LatinoJustice PRLDEF Deputy General Counsel and co-lead counsel on the Santos case. “The firm’s pro bono representation was instrumental to developing a critical new constitutional legal protection for immigrant residents. And their generous donation and sponsorship of LatinoJustice’s CAP Leadership Institute supports our mission of providing expanding opportunities into the legal profession.”
“We’re proud of our partnership with LatinoJustice PRLDEF, to continue sponsoring the Civil Rights Fellowship program, and to welcome Patricia De La Hoya-Velez as the 2024 Nixon Peabody LatinoJustice Summer Civil Rights Fellow,” said Nixon Peabody Pro Bono Partner Matthew Richards. “We look forward to seeing Patricia contribute to LatinoJustice and Nixon Peabody’s shared objective of promoting equality and pursuing justice.”
