LatinoJustice PRLDEF Mourns the Loss of Dr. John Flateau

The following statement can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President and General Counsel of LatinoJustice PRLDEF:

“LatinoJustice PRLDEF deeply mourns the loss of Dr. John Flateau, for decades a steadfast ally and a trailblazing leader in the fight to protect the voting rights of New York’s communities of color.

“Throughout his life and career as a public servant, scholar and advocate, Dr. Flateau drove efforts that have for decades defended and expanded voting rights, educational access and civil rights for countless New Yorkers throughout the city and state. As one of the intellectual authors of the Unity Maps, a coalition to ensure electoral districts that fairly and equitably represent New Yorkers of color, and as the lead plaintiff in a successful federal lawsuit for fairer legislative districts, among many projects, Dr. Flateau’s work lay the foundation for a key part of LatinoJustice’s work on redistricting.

“Our hearts go out to Dr. Flateau’s loved ones. He will be dearly missed.”
