LatinoJustice PRLDEF Urges Community to Comment on Proposed Census Changes to Exclude Undocumented Immigrants from Count
New York, NY — The Trump administration is proposing to change the 2030 Census to count only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, excluding undocumented immigrants and people living in the country under temporary legal status.
The proposal would also remove questions used to collect information about race and ethnicity. It is open for public comments for 30 days.
The following statement can be attributed to Miranda Galindo, Senior Counsel, LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“Leaving millions of residents out of the census would undercount entire communities, weakening their political representation and jeopardizing critical funding for schools, hospitals, roads, emergency services and other essential programs.
“The administration’s plan to eliminate race and ethnicity data would also make discrimination and inequality more difficult to identify and address. The census must count everyone who lives in the United States. LatinoJustice will continue fighting to ensure our communities are fully counted. We urge the public to submit comments by October 13 to make their voices heard and help ensure our communities are not erased.”
