LatinoJustice Says Emergency Order by Mayor Adams “is a Sham”
NYC Mayor Suspends Part of Solitary Confinement Law

New York, NY – Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency in New York City jails and has suspended parts of a new law intended to ban solitary confinement in local jails a day before it was to take effect on July 28th, 2024. The suspension prevents the new law from limiting solitary confinement.

The law was scheduled to take effect after more than 20 people had died in New York City jails since January 2022.

Below you will find a statement by Andrew Case, Supervising Counsel at LatinoJustice PRLEF around the state of emergency and the suspension of the law:

“Mayor Adams’s sham emergency order demonstrates his contempt for those suffering Rikers Island, one of the most dangerous jails in the country. We have a criminal justice system that greatly affects our Latino and communities of color. The practice of placing them and others inside a cage and isolating them from all human contact, exposure to sensory deprivation is inhumane and must not be allowed to continue. The city council passed this law over his veto; New York does not have a king and the mayor is not free to disregard the law.”
