LatinoJustice Supports Federal Voting Rights Bill That Combats Voter Suppression & Establishes National Voting Standards
“Freedom to Vote Act” Will Expand Access to the Ballot box & Restore Rights to Disenfranchised Voters

New York, NY – The Freedom to Vote Act, a voting rights bill that would ban partisan gerrymandering in congressional redistricting, set minimum standards for voting access, support election workers and tackle felony disenfranchisement, was reintroduced in Congress this week. If enacted, the Freedom to Vote Act would be the most significant federal voting rights bill in decades.

The bill would:

  • Make November Election Days a public holiday

  • Enact automatic voter registration for each state

  • Require same-day voter registration and early voting periods in each state

  • Restore the right to vote in federal elections for people who have served their time for felony convictions

  • Expand voting protections and access requirements for disabled voters, military members and overseas voters

  • Strengthen donor transparency in pursuit of ending dark money in elections and

  • Establish federal protections to insulate nonpartisan state and local officials who administer elections.

The following statement can be attributed to Fulvia Vargas-De Leon, Senior Counsel at LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“The Freedom to Vote Act is an opportunity for our democracy to be centered around voters and not the self-serving partisan interests we see today. As voter suppressive efforts continue to be enacted in numerous states, it is crucial that Congress enact measures that will ensure our democracy continues to be “of the people, by the people, for the people.” And while favorable Supreme Court decisions this term upheld critical voting rights protections; we know all too well that retrogressive voter suppression efforts will continue to proliferate. The right to vote should never be conditioned on who’s in power or where you live. The Freedom to Vote Act will be the first step in setting nationwide standards that will protect voters and expand access to our democracy at all levels of government."
