LatinoJustice Warns Immigrant Community Regarding the High Cost of Self-Deportations

New York, NY – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on May 5th that it will offer $1,000 to undocumented individuals who agree to self-deport.

In light of this news LatinoJustice PRLDEF has issued the following statement that can be attributed to Stephanie Cordero, Senior Counsel for Immigrant Rights, LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“DHS’s offer to our immigrant community to self-deport is deeply misleading and could lead to serious, permanent consequences. It can break apart families unnecessarily, make it much harder to return to the U.S. lawfully in the future, and cause individuals to prematurely abandon applications for immigration benefits to which they may be entitled.

“DHS does not clearly explain how people who leave can be certain they will get the $1,000 stipend or how they can hold the government accountable if they don’t receive it. Any decision to leave the country should be made with individualized advice from a trusted immigration attorney, not because of vague promises. It is crucial for the community to know their rights and get legal assessments before making a life-changing decision."
