New NYPD Cooperation with ICE Endangers Immigrant Rights, says LatinoJustice
New York, NY – According to media reports, the New York Police Department (NYPD) improperly shared with federal immigration officers last month a report containing a sealed criminal record of a woman of Palestinian origin.
The following statement can be attributed to Rex Chen, Supervising Attorney for Immigrant Rights at LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“For the NYPD to share Leqaa Kordia’s arrest record with federal immigration authorities clearly violates city law, which prohibits local police from aiding ICE. Kordia’s charge was related to a peaceful protest and was dismissed and sealed. This makes its inclusion in a federal report questionable and deeply concerning. New York must uphold its commitment to protect immigrants and people expressing their beliefs under their First Amendment rights. Latinojustice calls on NYPD to conduct a full investigation into the incident as we continue to monitor the case and work to ensure the rights of all our immigrant community are protected.”
