Plan to Cancel Legally Obtained SSN’s is an Abuse of Power, says LatinoJustice
New York, NY – According to press reports, the Trump administration has directed the Social Security Administration to begin moving social security information of thousands of immigrants who legally have social security numbers into a database the agency uses to track who has died and is therefore no longer eligible to receive benefits. This move would in effect cut off access for those people from being able to legally work, bank or carry out routine and vital transactions in the US.
The following statement can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President and General Counsel at LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“The administration’s reported plan to cut off immigrants from their legally obtained Social Security numbers and records contradicts our constitutional and civil rights, as it officially declares those people as dead. Cutting off access to jobs, banking, government services and most routine and vital transactions effectively renders those moved onto the ‘dead list’ as non-persons. This is yet another move to criminalize, erase and silence our communities. LatinoJustice reject this policy and will work to defend the rights of our immigrant community.”
