Supreme Court Abets Disenfranchisement of Virginia Voters, Adds to Voter Intimidation Environment, Says LatinoJustice PRLDEF
New York, NY – Less than a week before Election Day, the Supreme Court today ruled 6-3 to allow the state of Virginia to remove 1,600 people from voter rolls under a claim that they are non-citizens, reversing two lower court rulings that barred the move.
In light of this news LatinoJustice PRLDEF released the following statement that can be attributed to Miranda Galindo, Supervising Counsel, LatinoJustice PRLDEF:
“The majority of the Supreme Court has once again shamefully sided with those who seek to restrict the rights of voters, this time abetting the lie that voter rolls contain noncitizens. This decision is a betrayal of Virginia voters, and clearly targets Latino voters, adding to the climate of voter intimidation. We remind those impacted by this purge that Virginia has same day voter registration, those eligible to vote still have a legal avenue to participate. We will continue to monitor this case and other cases that aim to obstruct the sacred right to vote for Latinos and other people in the US."
