About the Report:
LatinoJustice PRLDEF released its 2025 Legislative Roundup, a comprehensive report highlighting the organization’s legislative advocacy across criminal justice, immigrant rights, education and economic justice, and voting rights.
For more than five decades, LatinoJustice PRLDEF has fought to advance civil rights through litigation, community empowerment, and policy advocacy. With political gridlock in Congress, LatinoJustice has focused on state legislatures in New York, Florida, Texas, and California, where advocacy efforts can have the greatest impact.
Report Highlights:
- Criminal Justice: LatinoJustice played a leading role in efforts to end solitary confinement in Florida, abolish the death penalty in California, expand youth rehabilitation opportunities, and fight parole restrictions in Texas. In New York, the organization pushed to dismantle the NYPD gang database and limit the militarized Strategic Response Group.
- Education & Economic Justice: LatinoJustice joined coalitions to fight discriminatory admissions practices in higher education, protect immigrant students in Tennessee from exclusionary enrollment policies, and advance fair hiring initiatives in California.
- Immigrant Rights: LatinoJustice opposed Texas legislation mandating ICE collaboration and championed immigrant protections in New York, including the New York CARES Act, which would expand benefits for undocumented crime survivors.
- Voting Rights: Building on leadership in advancing state voting rights acts, LatinoJustice worked to secure funding for Connecticut’s Voting Rights Act implementation, supported pending legislation in Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and continued to prepare the ground for a Florida VRA.
