Latino Civil Rights Group Responds to Mass Arrests at Columbia University
New York, NY – In response to Columbia University’s deployment of the NYPD, including its Strategic Response Group, to arrest scores of pro-Palestine student demonstrators on Thursday, LatinoJustice PRLDEF issued the following statement, which can be attributed to President and General Counsel Lourdes M. Rosado:
“As an organization focused on human and civil rights, LatinoJustice is committed to uplifting the voices of Latinos and other historically disempowered groups. Columbia University’s move to quash student protest through the use of the NYPD on its campus and surrounding public space is unacceptable and contrary to the democratic values of free expression. We are especially disturbed by the NYPD’s use of its notorious Strategic Response Group, the unit responsible for much of the NYPD violence during the 2020 racial justice uprisings and other protests since. Along with other organizations, we have called for this heavily militarized unit to be disbanded. In the NYPD’s handling of recent protests, we have seen a pattern of disparate and potentially discriminatory use of iron-fisted tactics depending on the message and messengers of protests.
“We are also deeply concerned that the university’s clamp down on mostly peaceful protesters undermines its reputation as a citadel of learning committed to fostering a robust exchange of ideas no matter how unsettling some may find those ideas. Columbia student activism on local and global issues has a long and storied history, from anti-Vietnam War and gentrification protests in the 1960s to anti-apartheid divestment protests of the 1980s and more. Calling the police on a peaceful encampment highlights the administration’s own shameful legacy: the last mass arrest of students, for protesting the Vietnam War, resulted in the ouster of the university’s president and significant internal reforms.”
Grupo latino de derechos civiles responde a los arrestos masivos en la Universidad de Columbia
Nueva York, NY – En respuesta al llamado por la Universidad de Columbia a un despliegue de la policía de Nueva York, incluido su Grupo de Respuesta Estratégica (conocida por sus siglas en inglés como SRG), para arrestar a decenas de estudiantes manifestantes pro-palestinos el jueves, LatinoJustice PRLDEF emitió la siguiente declaración, que puede atribuirse a la Presidenta y Consejera General Lourdes M. Rosado:
“Como organización centrada en los derechos humanos y civiles, LatinoJustice está comprometida a elevar las voces de los latinos y otros grupos históricamente desempoderados. La decisión de la Universidad de Columbia de sofocar las protestas estudiantiles mediante el uso de la policía de Nueva York en su campus y el espacio público circundante es inaceptable y contraria a los valores democráticos de la libre expresión. Estamos especialmente preocupados por el uso por parte del Departamento de Policía de Nueva York de su notorio Grupo de Respuesta Estratégica, la unidad responsable de gran parte de la violencia del Departamento de Policía de Nueva York durante los levantamientos por la justicia racial de 2020 y otras protestas posteriores. Junto con otras organizaciones, hemos pedido la disolución de esta unidad fuertemente militarizada. En el manejo de las protestas recientes por parte de la policía de Nueva York, hemos visto un patrón de uso dispar y potencialmente discriminatorio de tácticas de mano dura dependiendo del mensaje y los mensajeros de las protestas.
“También estamos profundamente preocupados de que la represión de la universidad contra los manifestantes, en su mayoría pacíficos, socave su reputación como una ciudadela del aprendizaje comprometida con el fomento de un intercambio sólido de ideas, sin importar cuán inquietantes puedan parecer esas ideas para algunos.
