LatinoJustice Applauds Halt to Harmful Border Bill
Judge Strikes Down Unconstitutional SB4

Austin, TX – Federal judge David Ezra ruled against Senate Bill 4, a new state border enforcement bill that would allow state and local police to detain, arrest and deport people suspected of illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. The decision comes after both the Justice Department and Immigration advocacy and civil rights groups sued the state. The lawsuits were then consolidated and heard in federal court.

The law was set to go into effect starting March 5th, 2024.

The following statement can be attributed to Karen Muñoz, Justice Catalyst Fellow at LatinoJustice PRLDEF:

“SB4 has no place in Texas and Judge Ezra's decision today makes it clear what we already know: Texas' SB4 goes far beyond what the U.S. Constitution allows and is only an attempt to keep immigrants in fear. SB4 would have irreparable damage in our community and lead to further targeting, discrimination and racial profiling of our communities. We're grateful the Judge has decided to halt the implementation of the law and will continue pushing for justice for immigrants in Texas and beyond.”
