LatinoJustice PRLDEF Applauds Department of Labor’s New Overtime Rules
Millons of Workers Would be Eligible to Receive Overtime Pay

New York, NY - The Biden administration today announced a new rule that would extend overtime pay to over 4 million workers.

Under the rule, workers who make under $58,656 a year and work over 40 hours a week must be paid time-and-a-half their regular rate of pay for hours worked above 40/week. The rule also requires that salary thresholds be automatically updated every three years based on up-to-date wage data.

The following statement can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President and General Counsel for LatinoJustice PRLDEF:

“For decades LatinoJustice has defended employment rights for Latino, immigrant and other low-wage workers. We are happy to hear that workers who were once excluded from receiving additional pay for the work they put in at their place of employment will finally receive this basic right.

“According to data by the Department of Labor, Latinos constitute 25.9% of the leisure and hospitality workforce, 25% in agriculture, and 18.8% in retail trade which are some of the industries that are expected to be the broadest impacted by this change. This is a step in the right direction for millions of workers and their families. LatinoJustice PRLDEF will continue to work to break down barriers and ensure Latino and other workers gain greater access to family-sustaining employment.”
