LatinoJustice PRLDEF Supports President’s Budget Proposal to Provide Federal Benefits Equity for Residents of Puerto Rico

NEW YORK- LatinoJustice PRLDEF, a national civil rights organization working to advance equity and justice for Latino communities in the states and Puerto Rico, welcomed President Biden’s 2025 budget request to eliminate Medicaid funding caps for Puerto Rico and call for parity for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Supplemental Security Income federal programs to all U.S. territories.

The following statement can be attributed to Lourdes M. Rosado, President and General Counsel of LatinoJustice PRLDEF:

“We are encouraged by President Biden’s proposal to finally ensure parity for Puerto Ricans in three federal programs: Medicaid, SNAP and SSI. For far too long, Puerto Ricans have been treated as second-class citizens. Puerto Rico has a disproportionately large number of people who are elderly and/or disabled, with 43.5% of residents living below the poverty line. LatinoJustice will continue to work to ensure all Puerto Ricans and those in the diaspora are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. We hope the White House and Congress follows through with this proposal; it's time to correct a wrong that has denied Puerto Ricans assistance for their most basic human needs. “
