State-Run & Funded Program Provides Relief for NYS Low-Wage Immigrant Workers
LatinoJustice Assisting Workers Apply to the Excluded Workers Fund & with Bilingual Trainings

New York, NY- On August 2, 2021, New York State initiated the application process for assistance under the Excluded Workers Fund (EWF). LatinoJustice PRLDEF, a national civil rights organization dedicated to protecting the civil and human rights of the Latinx community, is proud to announce that it will be advising undocumented Latinx New Yorkers of their rights under the fund as well as assisting them in the application process.

The $2.1 billion fund is the first state-run and state funded program in the nation created to help New Yorkers with a one-time payment who were unable to receive unemployment, pandemic, or other federal relief benefits due to immigration status or other reasons.

“Recent statistics show that almost 4 million residents of New York State are Latino or Latina, a population disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. This much deserved assistance to undocumented workers, most of whom provided essential services during the coronavirus crisis, will help alleviate the struggles of so many families, without fear of government action on their immigration status”, according to LatinoJustice Senior Counsel Lía Fiol-Matta.

Funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and individuals are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Eligible individuals who would like support with the EFW application or need more information can contact LatinoJustice PRLDEF by calling (212) 219-3360, ext. 7574 or 1 (800) 328-2322 as well as emailing [email protected] for case consultations and application assistance. LatinoJustice will conduct a  webinar in Spanish on August 16th at 6PM to explain how workers can apply to the EWF and to go over their rights.

“In addition, LatinoJustice legal staff is available to conduct English and Spanish-language Know Your Rights trainings on how to apply, in partnership with local community-based organizations”, advised Jose Luis Perez, Deputy General Counsel with LatinoJustice PRLDEF.

To learn more about an upcoming training around EWF or to have access to additional informational materials the community can visit LatinoJustice PRLDEF online at LatinoJustice.org or by following LatinoJustice on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
