Why Give

thermo

For nearly 50 years, LatinoJustice has worked to defend human and civil rights for Latinos in the United States. As the global

pandemic claimed the lives of over 750,000 people nationwide and ravaged our economy, black and brown communities are being disproportionately impacted. The long-term economic devastation of this crisis on our communities will be felt for decades to come and is the result of centuries of inequity driven by policies that disadvantaged communities of color. The work to rebuild and reimagine what a truly just and equitable society should be, will be long and difficult, but it is our resolve to see it through.

Our theme in 2021 – Connect, Build, and Transcend – reflects and captures the essence of our work to protect and advance Latinx civil and human rights throughout the country. Your donation enables us to defend the rights of Latinx workers, students, and families; invest in strategies that promote restorative justice; ensure Latinx representation in civic and political processes as we strive to build a more just and inclusive society. Please consider investing in our work this #GivingTuesday.

Promote Economic Equity

Our economic justice platform addresses inequities in policy and practice that harm or disadvantage Latinx workers and families. The Covid-19 pandemic exposed the unique vulnerabilities that low-wage earning Latinx essential workers contend with every day. Much of our work is related to the exploitation of Latinos by employers in the hospitality, restaurant, industrial factories, home care, and domestic worker industries. We have focused our workplace justice efforts on combating wage theft, unsafe working conditions, and sexual harassment, among other attacks on immigrant workers. Learn more about our work here.

Reimagine Justice and Public Safety

LatinoJustice uses litigation, advocacy, narrative change and data to work toward effecting a fundamental change in the way that justice is viewed, applied and evaluated in the U.S. With goals to reduce mass incarceration and to advocate for policies and laws that promote public safety and ensure successful re-entry, our work on criminal justice reform addresses the worst aspects of immigration, addressing the ethnically and racially targeted criminal justice policies that target, detain and deport Latino immigrants. We’ve taken legal action against school districts targeting and mislabeling Latino Unaccompanied Minor immigrant students as gang members, leading to expulsion and, inevitably, deportation.  Read about our Reenvision Justicia work here.

Develop Latinx Leadership

LJP's legal education pipeline program continued to expand during the past year. Our Corporate / Law Firm Alliance Summer Program (CLASP) added several law firms and corporations to its roster and maintained 100% placement of CLASP interns into full-time attorney positions upon graduation. We grew our legal pipeline programs exponentially, more than tripling participation in our LAWbound law school prep program, thus adding to the roster of future lawyers who will help bring the Latinx perspective to legal spaces for decades to come. Our LJP Líderes young professionals board and their network of peers mentor dozens of Next Generation Líderes mentees. We have widely increased our reach to serve students via virtual programming throughout our geographic footprint. Learn more about our legal pipeline and leadership development work.
